History

Hialeah means pretty prairie or high prairie, a name given by a Seminole Indian named Willie Willie when pioneer developer James Bright asked him to describe the property. Bright is a cattleman from Missouri who came to Miami in 1909 and bought 640 acres of submerged land northwest of the city. He dug the Miami Canal and drained his land within a few months and then joined with New York developer and aviator Glenn Curtiss to incorporate Hialeah in 1921. Their company was able to sell $1 million worth of land in less than 2 weeks following the incorporation. Hialeah is now the sixth-largest city in Florida with a population of more than 234,000.
